Green Guru Gear

We are Suckers for Seattle!

It was an amazing show with so many customers! People loved all of our products. We also recycled a couple hundred bike tubes at the event! The Big Shot bike powered generator powering the Sailrite Sewing Machine was a real hit. People were so captivated watching the power from the bike run the machine to sew and transform old tubes into cool change pouches and card holders. We were also part of a kids scavenger hunt, where they would ask a bike safety question to receive a stamp. All and all this was one of our best bike shows ever. Thanks Seattle for your support! We look forward to doing it again. If you want to find our products in town, check out Second Ascent, Seattle Electric Bikes, Eurostyle and the REI flagship Seattle Store, with more retailers to come soon!

Upcycle Project  |  Do it yourself recycling                                                                   Homemade Cuff

Why pay for those expensive leather cuffs when you can make your own trendy version from an old bike inner tube? You can make these for females or males!

To get going all you need is your old inner tube, scissors, needle and thread, and an old button.  For mine I used a road bike inner tube but the thickness will just vary if you use a different type. I took the inner tube and wrapped it around my wrist to measure the size, make sure there is about a 1.5” overlap and that it is not too tight. Mark with chalk or pencil where the ends would be and cut. Double check on your wrist after you cut it, if it is too tight no worries you have plenty of tire left. Take the needle and thread and hand stitch each end closed along the openings. (Bigger needles work better but just push it through; it’s just a tough guy) Now go find an old button, one of those extras in the little bags you always keep, or one from that cool kid shirt you never wore. I used an old rustic metal one I had but an exciting color earns you extra points.  Pick one side to sew the button on, sew it about half an inch in from the edge. Wrap it around your wrist with the button on and mark on the other end where you will need the buttonhole. Folding the tube in half just make a cut for the buttonhole. YAY, there you have it, you are now officially part of the cool kids club!

What:

Recycling Stations to collect bike tubes, wetsuits, climbing ropes, event banners and more that would otherwise go to the landfill are collected in our easy to set up stations that we help manage.

How:

These stations are at many local businesses and bike shops around the front range.  To find a station near you visit our website. http://www.greengurugear.com/recycling.html

People simply drop off their unwated or unusable items and we are able to pick them up and upcycle them into usable durable products.

The Facts:

In 2011 Green Guru turned 4,450 pounds of bicycle tubes into stylish gear.

The Green Guru Bicycle Tube Recycling Program has been collecting and upcycling since 2005 and is continuing to grow at a hungry pace because an avid bicyclist can go through an average of 2-3 tubes per year.

Happy Valentines Day!
As you know we love bikes and eco adventures. We love them even more with the ones we love! This year celebrate Valentine’s Day by getting out together on a bike ride, hike, surf or climb with your honey.

Check out this great review we got in URBAN VELO! Don’t worry we have removed the zipper pull and replaced with a silent piece of cord:) Also not mentioned in the article is that you can even fit a spare tube and a cold beverage if you like. The wet suit neoprene insulates your refreshment as well as shock absorbs that rough ride. No guarantee on fizz though!

Green Guru is proud to announce a new partnership with Kenda Tires and Tubes to grow bike tube recycling program.

Kenda Tires has been manufacturing tubes for over 50 years and is an exciting partner to jump start the new year of Green Guru’s Bicycle Tube Recycling Programs. This program that started in 2005 uses recycling stations to collect bike inner tubes. These reclaim stations also accept wetsuits, climbing robe, vinyl event banners, and more and turn them into stylish, long lasting gear. Check out the beauty of upcycling, the before and after we get our hands on the raw material. Check out our web site for more.
